The Rock is Your Witness

This Shabbat we were reading Joshua 23-24, and this verse jumped out at me:

Joshua 24:27 "And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of YHWH which He spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God."

Let's take the verse apart by punctuation mark. Joshua said to all the people who were gathered to meet him:

- "This stone shall be a witness unto us." There are two witnesses. The people are a witness against themselves (Josh 24:22), as is this rock. Why is this rock a witness? The next part tells us-

-"For it hath heard all the words of Yahweh which He spake unto us." This rock HEARD YHWH! When Yahweh spoke the terms of the covenant from Mt. Sinai (Ex 19:17-20:26), this rock heard it.

-"It shall be therefore a witness unto you," It is because the rock has heard YHWH speak these words, that it is your witness.

-"Lest ye deny your God." This rock is your witness so that you CANNOT SAY that YHWH doesn't exist or reign supreme. It has heard the words of the covenant, and so have you- so live by them.
Something more to chew on-

Yeshua is our rock. He is our witness of the Father- and of Torah- since before the world began. He has heard the words of YHWH- He is the Word of YHWH. The Word is the rock is the witness... We could go in circles on that one {Actually we did. :-) }

John 1:1-2 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God."

For those of us who have chosen Yahweh's covenant, we are witnesses against ourselves if we fall astray. If we consider anything more important than hearing and obeying Yahweh's Word, we become witnesses that we have gone against our word and broken the covenant.
Hopefully in my next post I can tell you something about the rock "hearing" YHWH. -Or at least that's my plan. :-)

  1. Hey, that's interesting. I never thought about that in particular before.
