Be Strong and of Good Courage

"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for YHWH thy Elohim is with thee whithersoever thou goest."
Joshua 1:9
I once made my Dad a computer-wallpaper that had this verse on it. The picture that I used was the painting above. George Washington and the troops crossing that treacherous Delaware River in a last-ditch effort seemed appropriate to match with the verse. Even more so, knowing that the weather and other conditions on that night were much less glorious than the painting implies.
The verse from Joshua was part of our recent Torah readings. YHWH is commanding this new leader of His people to "be strong and of good courage" wherever he goes. Strength here is not implying a muscular strength, but rather a mental strength- a faith that YHWH will pull us through. Stand strong, plant your feet, don't be moved from the path I have set before you.
Courage is not being fearless, but rather doing what is right despite being afraid. Keep walking on the path YHWH has set before you, regardless of the consequences. YHWH our Elohim is with you "whithersoever thou goest", and in Him we are safe.
"The Name of יהוה is a strong tower; The righteous run into it and are safe." Proverbs 18:10
